The Way Ahead for Infrared and Fine Art Photography 2021

12th March 2021 By Colin Wright

Hi Everyone

As with a lot of us professional photographers, this has been a difficult year and we have had to re-prioritise both our potential income generation and also how we spend our photographic time.  As you know, in addtion to being a professional event and coporate photographer, working in Edinburgh, Glasgow and around Scotland, I am also a fine art infrared photographer and the lockdown has given me the opportunity to photograph more infrared in my local area.  Now that the weather is about to start changing, it is time to take the infrared photography genre forward, we will see more sunshine and also greater detail in the trees, to make our foliage images morre interesting.  Also it is worth pointing out that outdoor photography in general is easier in the spring and summer months, as you can take your time and frame the image easier, try doing that in Dunbar by the sea in the middle of November in sub-zero temperatures with a gale force wind blowing in your direction – in these cases, speed is of the esssence.  So what is in store for me this year 2021, well more infrared photogrpahy for a start, then I plan to expand on the plans for an “Infrared Photography in Scotland” book and I also aim to keep adding to my collection of infrared images, exploring new areas and subjects to photograph – nothing is sacred.  Whilst the lockdown has increased the number and range of photos from East Lothian that I now have to add to my collection – including an entirely new section for my book on infrared harbour photography, which I have now decided to add to the book – now will be the time to travel more throughout Scotland to add to the infrared images from other areas, in particular, Argyll and Highlands and Islands, plus some wildlife infrared photos.

So onwards and upwards and I will leave you with a few local infrared harbour and coastline  photos taken recently.

Until next time.

Professional Photographers in Scotland Going Against the Grain

3rd December 2020 By Colin Wright

Hi Everyone

As a professional photographer based in East Lothian, working in Edinburgh and around Scotland, like everyone else, I have had to adapt to a different life during the pandemic, with many of my corproate and event photoshoots either postponed or cancelled.  This has enabled me to spend large parts of the summer shooting infrared photography, which I love doing anyway.  It has also enabled me to experiment more and try different things against the grain, so to speak.  Normally fine art infrared photography works with sunlight and bright skies, however, the other day it was misty in East Lothian and I took my infrared camera to Traprain Law with the family, not really expecting anything, but also curious about how it would capture the mist in infrared.  The results were good and with the right settings, the camera still managed to capture the atmospher in a different ethereal way that infrared usually projects.  It is easy to forget that infrared cameras are just high dynamic range tools for the photographer and can work in low light, especially for black and white photography.  As a newly professional photogrpaher 15 years ago, the need to experiment helped me carve out a niche for commercial clients.  I provided ground level urban photos and developed my own style.  Nowadays I provide the clients with what they ask for to the best of my ability, but also including some extra infrared photographs, which they always love.  I have used infrared photography in the following commissions: weddings, urban, architecture, landscape, portraits and even sport.  So, as someone once said to me, look at what everyone is doing and then go and do the opposite.

Hope this helps.

Kind Regards

Colin

Urban Photography in Glasgow

23rd August 2020 By Colin Wright

I paid a visit to Glasgow last week and although the weather was pretty awful some of the time, I was able to get some good urban photography during my time there.   As a professional photographer specialising in corporate and fine art photography in Scotland, it is often forgotten that I started my professional career selling landscape and urban photos to media and PR companies.  I love Glasgow, especially the River Clyde and it’s bridges, particulalry the Arc Bridge, otherwise affectionately known as the Squinty Bridge by the locals.  Whilst I had to suffer a few heavy showers, there were also a couple of breaks in the weather and I was able to get some decent urban photographs with my fish-eye lens and also to add to my collection of infrared photos for my book on Infrared photography in Scotland.  Bridges are always great to photograph, as they are landmarks and you can get arty with the angles and the perpective.  Fish eye lenses will give you some whacky converging vericles and whilst it is often possible to correct these with the appropriate software, I tend to leave the photos as they are, as I like the weirdness of it all.  In some case, you are able to keep a straight horizon and the photo does not look strange at all, it just depends on your intention.  there was also an opportunity to re-visit my obesssion with puddle photography – you are nearly always going to have this option in Glasow to be honest.  A few of the photos were taken at alow angle to depict the reflections on the puddles.  Anyway, let me know what you think.  this is the first of many visits in the coming months to that great city.

Kind Regards

Colin

Newspaper Photography Tips by Professional Event and Corporate Photographer Colin Wright, Edinburgh, Scotland

20th April 2020 By Colin Wright

Newspaper Photography Tips from a Professional Corporate and Event Photographer, Edinburgh, Scotland

As a professional corporate and event photographer operating around Scotland, I have often been asked about what other work I have done.  Well, in addition to doing landscape and fine art photography at the start of my career, I have also worked for almost 10 years in the newspaper photography industry and this is where I learned a lot of my craft for conferences and events, particularly the need to work under pressure in limited time and it also gave me the confidence to tackle anything new.  So here are a few newspaper photography tips below:

  1. You need to work fast with very little time
  2. You need to travel light with limited gear, as you are going to travel from location to location, often on foot, depending on parking
  3. You need to be good at dealing with all types of people from the old granny, to the football manager
  4. You need to be able to send the photos to the paper right away with limited editing
  5. You need to totally be able to rely on your gear, back-up is recommended, you can’t go home to replace a flash if you are 30 miles form home with a deadline
  6. You need to be versatile, ie on one day I would have to photograph football, rugby, gala days, politicians and local disputes.  it give you a good general grounding and is why newspaper photographers can also make good wedding photographers
  7. You need to enjoy the pressure and buzz.  it is hard work and you wont get paid as much as other commissions, but it’s great fun

Hope this helps.

Regards

Port Seton Harbour in Infrared

19th February 2020 By Colin Wright

A quick trip to Port Seton Harbour between conference photography commissions in Edinburgh yesterday, to take some infrared photos, as part of my infrared photography in Scotland collection.  It had to be quick, as it was extremely cold and very windy (I also nearly got blown of the harbour wall).  I plan to re-visit a few of my earlier East Lothian destinations as we approach the lighter nights.
