The Way Ahead for Infrared and Fine Art Photography 2021

12th March 2021 By Colin Wright

Hi Everyone

As with a lot of us professional photographers, this has been a difficult year and we have had to re-prioritise both our potential income generation and also how we spend our photographic time.  As you know, in addtion to being a professional event and coporate photographer, working in Edinburgh, Glasgow and around Scotland, I am also a fine art infrared photographer and the lockdown has given me the opportunity to photograph more infrared in my local area.  Now that the weather is about to start changing, it is time to take the infrared photography genre forward, we will see more sunshine and also greater detail in the trees, to make our foliage images morre interesting.  Also it is worth pointing out that outdoor photography in general is easier in the spring and summer months, as you can take your time and frame the image easier, try doing that in Dunbar by the sea in the middle of November in sub-zero temperatures with a gale force wind blowing in your direction – in these cases, speed is of the esssence.  So what is in store for me this year 2021, well more infrared photogrpahy for a start, then I plan to expand on the plans for an “Infrared Photography in Scotland” book and I also aim to keep adding to my collection of infrared images, exploring new areas and subjects to photograph – nothing is sacred.  Whilst the lockdown has increased the number and range of photos from East Lothian that I now have to add to my collection – including an entirely new section for my book on infrared harbour photography, which I have now decided to add to the book – now will be the time to travel more throughout Scotland to add to the infrared images from other areas, in particular, Argyll and Highlands and Islands, plus some wildlife infrared photos.

So onwards and upwards and I will leave you with a few local infrared harbour and coastline  photos taken recently.

Until next time.

Keeping Fine Art Photography Active During Lockdown

6th February 2021 By Colin Wright

Waves in Dunbar

Hi Everyone

So how do professional photographers in Scotland keep creative during this very difficult time.  As an event photographer operating in Edinburgh and around Scotland, I have had to put a halt on my photographic commissions for the meantime, although I had some work in the summer.  Add to the fact that I have had Covid 19 to the equation and it should be really difficult to motivate myself.  You would think so but to be honest, sometimes in the darkest of times art can flourish.  I have been out and about, when the weather permits, certainly not just now mind you due too the awful weather, taking infrared and landscape photos around Dunbar.  I have already mentioned how concentrating on one or two local subjects can focus your mind and encourages experimentation.  Dark thoughts can often produce art and I also find storms to be a good source for my photography during difficult times.  So hope you enjoy the photo. It was taken at what has been one of the most difficult times for me.  So keep on creating.

Kind Regards

Colin

The Kelpies in Infrared and Beyond – Fine Art Photography Scotland

24th January 2021 By Colin Wright

Hi Everyone

Like lot of photographers, I have concentrated mostly on fine art projects from a local point of view due to the effect the pandemic has had on my corporate and event commissions in Edinburgh and throughout Scotland.  One of my big success stories last year was infrared images of the Kelpies installation in Scotland.  I have used the additional time to try different techniques in infrared  Whilst this was on of the first subjects I photographed in infrared a few years ago, I only explored it in black and white, whereas this time I have tried a variety of techniques including false colour and HDR.  As this is a well photographed subject, I have tried to do something entirely different, giving the Kelpies a somewhat mystical and scary look, making the people almost minuscule in comparison to the installation which I have tried to give a menacing look.  The location is brilliant for infrared, due to the metallic surfaces, water and the foliage in the landscape in general.  It is totally unique and I hope to keep photographing it for a long time to come.  So anyway, enjoy these photos.

Until next time.

Choice of Gear for the Professional Photographer in Scotland

13th January 2021 By Colin Wright

Hi Everyone

As professional photographers make plans for the new year and possible investment strategies for new equipment, now would be a good ttime to chat about what equipment is the most suitable and why.  Of course the decision has to be consistent with your line of photography.      I need my equipment to work well in low light and it requires to be versatile ie suitable for a conference photography commissions in Edinburgh, one day and also for a bungee jumping event or an outdoor portait photoshoot the next.  I also have specialist equipment for my fine art infrared work, using a converted Nikon DSLR camera.  So which brand do we choose, well this is often down to money and suitability.  I started as a Nikon photographer 17 years ago but moved to Canon as they were – at the time – ahead of Nikon for fast focussing and frames per second for sports and event photography, they have since caught up, but its too late now, as I have invested in lenses and equipment for my Canon DSLR bodies.  I do however use Nikon for infrared work, this is largely due to the availability of a high pixel body at the time in the Nikon D800 and I wanted high resloution for my infrared photos, so I can blow them up for large print sales.  I started to use Fuji due to the portability of their mirrorless cameras and quality of lenses, however the poorer performance in low light and lack fast focussing – at the time – prevented me from investing further, however it is my camera of choice for landscape photogrpahy due to lens quality and portability.  So, like my choice of supermarkets, I am not tied to one brand and I suggest as photographers, either amateur of professional, you do the same, with all your decisions based on suitability, cost and availability at the time.  Dont be seduced by the latest model at full price and buy according to your needs.

Hope this helps.

Until next time.

Kind Regards

Professional Photographers in Scotland and the New Lockdown

7th January 2021 By Colin Wright

Hi Everyone

Sorry to take so long to blog.  I have been a victim of the Covid virus and I am just starting to get a bit better, so not a lot of photography has been pursued recently.  However, I am looking forward to some corporate and event photography in Edinburgh and around Scotland in the near future after this second lockdown and I also hope to get some fine art and infrared photography images for the website pretty soon.  I have changed to a Mac system and I am really looking forward to working with my new IMac which syncs seamlessly with my Apple devices and works well with all my portable products.  Whilst I have enjoyed working with Windows and android devices, I feel that Apple products have the longevity that I require and the way they blend well with photoshop seems to suit my workflow.  So onwards and upwards and watch this space.

Another blog will follow soon.

Happy new year to you all.

Kind Regards

Colin
