Specialising as a corporate and event photographer in Edinburgh and Glasgow

4th July 2023 By Colin Wright

Hi Everyone

Specialist freelance photographers Edinburgh, Glasgow, Scotland.

Today we will be looking at the subject of whether photographers should specialise in one or two specific types of photography.  Now, when I started out as a trained photographer, it was my intention to work as a professional photographer in Edinburgh and around Scotland.  I always enjoyed photographing landscapes and sports photography always held an interest for me, but as a trained photographer just starting out 20 years ago, I wanted to try different photographic commissions and my training enabled me to tackle all types of photography, so I worked as an interior photographer in Scotland, conference photographer in Edinburgh and a sports photographer in and around Scotland.  I also did portraits, still life photography in East Lothian and studio work, but the most valuable commission I did was working for 10 years as a newspaper photographer in Edinburgh and East Lothian, this gave me an all round grounding and enabled me to realise what I was good at and what I enjoyed.  I was also contacted by a design agency who saw my potential in landscape and urban photography White Light Media – Experts in Creative Comms, in addition to my all round sports photography ability.   After this point an NHS organisation NHS Education for Scotland | NES contacted me to commission me for conference photography in Edinburgh and I worked for them for over 10 years, so you get the pattern here, you build up your portfolio and if you are good, you will be discovered by clients who will like your website or social media photographs.

Corporate Conference and Event Photography Edinburgh and Throughout Scotland – Colin Wright Photography (edinburghphotographer.com) also working in PR photography (again a throwback from my newspaper photography days) and I do interiors, dogs, landscape and I sell infrared fine art photographs.  I don’t like turning down photography commissions but I feel there are people better equipped than me to do studio work, babies school photography etc.  Its all about finding your feet and trying to find your niche.  I also feel it helped being a member of the Royal Photographic Society The Royal Photographic Society – Home – RPS who helped me find my way with qualifications and valuable advice along the way for ne w professionals.  Now I think I know what I can do and do well and have the confidence to go for that, however, I will always consider new horizons and I remain open to new suggestions and offers.  I hope this helps all you new professional photographers out there, just stick at it and work hard and you will get there.

Until next time.

Kind Regards

Colin

Infrared Photos of the Year 2019

30th December 2019 By Colin Wright

Hi All

I thought as we approach the end of the year, I would look back on 2019 and choose my infrared photo of the year.  Us professional photographers can often find it difficult to choose our favourite photos and I have a large selection of infrared photography from around Scotland taken this year in both colour and black and white.  It can be fairly difficult to choose.  I also find it interesting that photographers nearly always choose images that are different from what the choice of their clients.  This year I couldn’t make up my mind, so I have chosen 2 and you can decide. I intend to shoot more infrared photography next year, in addition to introducing it more to my corporate and event photography in Edinburgh and around Scotland, so watch this space.  The two photos below are from the Isle of Mull and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and they demonstrate one of the great things about photography, which is that you can combine you professional photographer skills around Scotland with your leisure time.  Watch out for a digital infrared photography collection next year, in addition to news about a book of infrared photos from Scotland.

Have a great New Year.

Regards

Colin

Challenges in the Modern Age for Professional Photographers in Scotland

5th April 2019 By Colin Wright

Infrared photography in Scotland by professional corporate and event photographer Colin Wright, Edinburgh, Scotland
infrared photography, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK by event and corporate photographer, by professional photographer Colin Wright, www.colinwrightphotography.co.uk

For commercial freelance photographers working in the industry in Scotland and the UK, there are many challenges facing us. Some of these challenges are new and the landscape for photographers is totally different now than it was when I started out as a commercial corporate photographer in Edinburgh 15 years ago.

I have listed a few of the fresh issues for our profession. I am sure there are many more you can think of:

  1. The market is very crowded, due to the digital revolution and also the general increase in interest because of camera phones.
  2. There are more agencies offering work, usually at lower rates, this usually means working harder for less, or applying for work through a bid site.
  3. The scope for creativity is even greater due to the technology. Take one of my specialisms for instance – Infrared Photography. Previously this could only be achieved with special film, using tripods and long exposures. Now you can have your camera converted to take hand held infrared images.
  4. For most of us, the rates paid have gone down due to the competition.
  5. The photographer of today needs a wider range of skills than before, not only in photography, but also in IT, social media, website building and other marketing issues.
  6. The industry is changing rapidly on a daily basis. it is very important to keep up to date with technology, marketing trends, and the ever changing needs and expectations of the consumer.
  7. Although we are told that websites are less important, due to social media pages etc, a good professional website with high ISO ranking is still crucial for success.

Anyway, hope that helps. Next time I will look at areas that haven’t changed that are just as important today as they were 20 years ago.
