A great evening for the Heriot Watt Chemistry students Graduation Ball at the Voodoo Rooms in Edinburgh on Saturday. With the exception of a few posed formal shots, I was allowed total creative photography freedom, every professional event photographers dream and in this very original venue, it gave me a good opportunity to show of my candid reportage photography skills in Edinburgh at the weekend. It helped that the students and their friends and partners were a very cool crowd, making me feel at home, always a good thing for professional photographers.
Infrared Photography Edinburgh College
Infrared photography is different in many respects, mainly because you are often able to obtain an interesting and unique image out of something fairly ordinary that may or may not produce a photograph worth publishing with normal digital cameras. As a professional event and fine art photographer working around Edinburgh and throughout Scotland, I am often on the lookout for scenes that come to life with the right weather conditions and yesterday, monday 20th May was one of these days. Also, it only took me 20 minutes to produce the above images. The lesson learned is, always carry a camera and the weather in Scotland, as we know, can change by the minute, as it did yesterday.
Infrared Photography Edinburgh and East Lothian
As a freelance professional event photographer working in Scotland, things are starting to get very busy and I have just about had some free time before the big rush to do some infrared photography in and around Edinburgh. The above shot was taken at Dunbar in East Lothian. Someone asked me the other day what qualities infrared photographers need and I have thought of a few. The most important one is the ability to pre-visualise what the image will look like after the shoot. Whilst this is true of all photography, the image you see on your screen will often look very different from the final version in infrared. This gives people who were brought up on film cameras a distinct advantage, as we always had to pre-visualise anyway, there was no screen at the back of your camera and you had to wait on the developed image from the negative. Also with infrared photography, you almost have to have a view of a mystical land, a kind of alternative universe, because that is what the final image will look like in some cases, particularly colour infrared. A good understanding of the ideal weather for infrared is also required and the ability to adapt to changing conditions, always good for Scotland, so take that camera with you at all times.
Anyway, I hope that helps, now its off to Edinburgh Castle this week for a corporate photoshoot, followed by some sports photography with the Supercars at the weekend in East Lothian.
Kind Regards
Colin

Infrared Landscape Photography Commission Edinburgh, Scotland
As a corporate event photographer operating in and around Edinburgh and throughout Scotland, I am accustomed to selling infrared fine art prints to hotels and other establishments, in addition to making private sales, however the attached photo is the result of my first infrared commission from CrossReach in Edinburgh, where I was asked to do something a bit different in infrared to portray their Head office building in the Capital. The building is backed by a lovely garden, surrounded by trees and other plants. I have been biting my nails from a timescale point of view as it needs to be completed in the next fortnight, but I have been waiting for the trees to blossom for the infrared capture and the right sunlight. with clouds and blue sky. Luckily all these things came together last friday and I managed a good selection of images for the client, like the one below. Hopefully they love it and that this is the first of many infrared commissions.
Supercar Photography and Beyond
A quick blog just before the start of my Supercar event this weekend. As a professional event photographer operating in and around Scotland, I like to do a mixture of photos during my commercial photography commissions and the supercar motor sport events often give me the opportunity to take a few infrared photos like the ones in this post. It enables me to show my creative side in what is normally an enjoyable but nevertheless physically hard work type of commission.
