Hi Everyone
Good to get back to some photography at the weekend. As a professional photographer working in one of the most scenic countries in the world in Scotland, I never like to have too long without taking photos and at the weekend I was photographing a Dunbar United junior match, perfect weather but challenging low light.
I thought I would put together a few tips and hints for the sports photographer in Scotland and here they are:
- Focus is everything and each camera is different, if you are not using a camera designed for sports and wildlife make sure you are on the best focusing mode for fast action photography
- Position is also everything. At junior and amateur matches try and get the best position beyond the barrier if you are allowed. Behind the goals or at the corner flag is the best for football, or the half way line if you are covering the match for both clubs
- Dress accordingly and make sure you are protecting your gear and if you aren’t being paid and it is chucking it down, it is simply not worth the damage to your gear, only pro cameras are weather sealed and even then, they are not full proof
- Try and get creative, different angles, convert to black and white etc
- Remember to get some non action stuff ie the crowd, celebrations, arguments etc. As a professional photographer in Scotland, one of my best selling sports photos is of the crowd celebrating
More tips later, now its off to some conference event photography commissions in Edinburgh
Until next time
