As a professional event photographer, I am constantly outdoors, especially between the months of March and October and often the winter months for football and rugby sports photography in Edinburgh and around Scotland. It may sound obvious but there are certain things you can do to make your life easier when photographing outdoors, believe me, I as I have worked in all kinds of weather, particularly as a newspaper photographer in the Lothian area. One piece of advice is don’t always take shelter under a tree when photographing golf, sounds obvious but I was told off by officials for this once at Scottish PGA tournament. Take sun tan lotion even in the winter, I got sun stroke once in October photographing supercars. Keep your camera dry, take towels. If you aren’t being paid, don’t risk your gear getting wet – that said, a big wave soaked me and ruined my camera when photographing waves for fun once. Wear the right gear for the weather and remember your camera batteries wont last as long in bitterly cold weather, so take spares. Be careful when changing memory cards. I know someone – not me honest – who lost over a 1000 photos when he dropped his memory card in a puddle. That’s all for now. I know it sounds like a disaster prevention blog, but that’s how you learn I suppose. Until next time
